Every year, the publishing industry seems to fall in love. Not with one single book, but with a mood, or a feeling. Suddenly, certain kinds of stories are everywhere. One season it is cozy fantasy with low stakes and high comfort. The next it is high-heat romance with morally gray love interests. Then comes a wave of productivity nonfiction, or healing memoirs, or novels set in cloistered academic worlds. From the outside, it can feel orchestrated. From the inside, it is far more organic and far more fascinating.

So how do book trends actually happen?

They almost always begin with readers. Platforms like TikTok, especially its BookTok community, along with Instagram and YouTube, have transformed reading from a private act into a shared cultural event. A single passionate video can send a years old backlist novel rocketing onto bestseller lists. Readers gather around shared tropes and aesthetics, giving them shorthand names that function like bat signals. Enemies to lovers. Dark academia. Found family. When thousands of readers start using the same language to describe what they crave, the industry pays attention.

That said, BookTok’s influence is not quite the seismic force it was at its peak. The explosive, overnight breakouts are less frequent, and the algorithm no longer feels like a single pipeline capable of dictating the entire market. But social media as a whole remains deeply influential. Reader communities have diversified across platforms, and conversations are more fragmented but no less powerful. Discovery now happens through a constellation of micro influencers, niche newsletters, online book clubs, podcasts, and cross platform momentum. Instead of one dominant engine, we have an ecosystem. Trends may build more gradually, but they are still shaped in real time by what readers share, recommend, and obsess over publicly.
